Steven Harwick's premiere monograph, By the Skin of My Teeth, is lauded by i-D as “a powerful, celebratory and earnest collection of portraits...of the queer leather community.” The publication is a culmination of 10 years of work and includes a personal essay as well as interviews with artist Kembra Pfahler and adult film star Joel Someone. The book premiered at the Paris Ass Book Fair, had a launch at Fotografiska, which included an artist talk. It was subsequently stocked at CULTUREEDIT in Los Angeles, VooStore in Berlin, at Fotografiska's museum shop in New York. It was placed on the shortlist for achievement in Art Book in the London International Creative Competition. It was also awarded the Bronze in Book/Monograph in the PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris.
By the Skin of My Teeth had its New York debut at an event held at Fotografiska during its Pride month programming. Prefaced by a screening of Harwick's short film RAWHiDE, the artist was in conversation with Katie Rex discussing the book as well as inspirations for his work. A book signing concluded the event.
